Young sun bears just adore peanut butter, so what better way to finish the jars than to organise the Sun Bear Peanut Butter Treasure Hunt.
For the five sun bear orphans growing up together at Animals Asia’s Vietnam sanctuary, May has been very special.
Young sun bears adore peanut butter, so what better way to celebrate spring (and get the last drops out of some old jars) than the Sun Bear Peanut Butter Treasure Hunt.
A dedicated team of carers hid the nearly empty jars around the bears’ large outdoor enclosure, safe in the knowledge that all five bears would spend enjoyable hours foraging for the irresistible smell and enjoying the spoils.
Animals Asia Bear Manager Sarah van Herpt said:
“We regularly spread strong smelling and delicious smears around the enclosure because to young bears it’s the best treasure hunt you can imagine.
“Foraging is a huge part of bears’ natural behaviour in the wild and we work hard every day to ensure the bears have heaps of opportunity to do what comes naturally.”
Sun bear Goldie, who is just four years-old, proved to be the most determined jar “cleaner” spending a good 20 minutes getting every last drop out of one jar while relaxing on his back.
Sassy got a gold star for effort having walked around sniffing endlessly but didn’t manage to get a jar.
The Patience Award goes to Annemarie who waited until all the fuss calmed down, grabbed an already half-licked container then ducked under a platform to enjoy her prize.
Layla took the award for Shortest Attention Span, after she gave up early and foraged instead for all the regular delicious fruit and veg in the enclosure.
Smears popular with the bears include jam, peanut butter and stinky fermented tofu, which at the Miomojo Cub House are paid for thanks to the generous funding of Italian fashion company, Miomojo.
The five bears in the Miomojo Cub House aren’t cubs anymore, ranging from three to nine years-old, but from Murphy learning to walk to Annemarie learning how to trust and be a bear again, they have been on an amazing journey together.
The Miomojo Cub House is part-funded by Miomojo – a responsible fashion company from Italy making gorgeous fashion accessories that don’t harm animals or the environment.
