Sun bear Layla, who arrived at Animals Asia's Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre in June this year, has been moved to a spacious new enclosure with lots of new toys.
Having outgrown her first enclosure in just five months, bear cub Layla is certainly growing up fast.
Animals Asia's Bear Manager Sarah Dempsey said:
"Layla weighed just 13kg when she arrived and required very close care. She's grown up quite a bit since then and is now over 31kg and adapting really well to her new environment."
Layla's new enclosure is packed with play items like hammocks, climbing frames, swings, multi-level platforms and tunnels.
The sun bear cub also receives a variety of enrichment items such as browse and is given twice daily opportunities to forage for food under rocks and logs.
Animals Asia's Vietnam Bear and Vet Team Director, Annemarie Weegenaar said:
"Layla is such a well-adjusted, active and playful bear. She explored every blade of grass and tried out every piece of furniture in the enclosure straight away. It's a real pleasure to see her out there enjoying herself in an environment that satisfies her needs."
Layla's new enclosure was made available as a direct result of the opening of the two new double bear houses at Animals Asia's Vietnam Bear Rescue Centre.
While Layla presently lives alone, staff remain hopeful that she may one day be integrated with sun bear Sassy who is a few years older.
