Volunteer workers - described as "the potential future leaders of China's growing animal welfare movement" - were brought together for a two-day summer camp at Animals Asia's Chengdu Bear Rescue Centre.

The 32 campers aged between 17 and 40, who have all volunteered with Animals Asia, were brought together to thank them for their help and so they could further learn and network to ultimately benefit animals across China.

Animals Asia Education Manager Xiaoxi Zhang, who organised the camp, said:

"The camp was a great opportunity for us to show our thanks to the many volunteers who make our work a reality throughout the year. It's also a fantastic networking opportunity which allows them to add to their already excellent knowledge of animal welfare and meet like-minded people. It was fascinating to hear these intelligent volunteers brainstorming solutions to fundamental questions, such as how to end bear bile farming and how to spread awareness of animal welfare. And of course we all had a blast."

Having bonded over a series of team-building exercises, the attendees heard talks on Animals Asia's key programmes while Zoo and Safari Parks Manager, Xin Pei, gave a presentation on animal welfare.

The sessions were followed by group trips to visit the bears where participants helped to prepare food and set up enclosures.

We've held these camps for a few years now and firmly believe that they are helping to educate and foster China's animal lovers and animal welfare advocates. These bright young people will return home to start projects and groups and share what they've learnt with friends and family, so there is a ripple effect. I have no doubt that some will go on to make a huge difference."
