Visiting professors get pats and plaudits at Hong Kong uni

Students got to interact with a dog (1)

Visiting professors wowed students at Hong Kong’s City University recently, having barked orders, waited patiently for treats and then enjoyed a tummy rub.

If you hadn’t guessed it already, these professors were of the canine variety and part of Animals Asia’s Professor Paws team.

Improving the lives of dogs accounts for much of Animals Asia’s work in the region and these four-legged educators are a secret weapon, changing perceptions and helping people learn about the benefits of life with a sentient, furry companion.

This appearance was to help promote good mental health among the University’s students who suffer constant pressure both in their work and social lives.

Students were relaxed when interacting with therapy animals

These therapy dogs and their guardian volunteers attended the university to teach students about the benefits of pet ownership and give them a chance to have a close encounter with our registered Animals Asia therapy dogs – a great way to unwind.

Karina O’Carroll, Animals Asia’s Animal Welfare Education Manager said:

“They were very receptive of the notion that companion animals can boost mental health – and it was evident in the delight on their faces as they interacted with the dogs. The students did grasp the concept that these beautiful creatures do so much more for us alive and as our companions, than as a source of food.

“A number of the students were so impressed that they signed up to become future Professor Paws volunteers – a sure sign that they valued the experience.”

Also in attendance was Ying Ying author of Starting with Max, who spoke about her personal experience of companion animals boosting mental health.

Animals Asia founder and CEO, Jill Robinson MBE said:

“It was a real pleasure for the Professor Paws team to come to the University. University life can be incredibly stressful in Asia with enormous pressure building up around exam time. This is just one of the many social issues which our Professor Paws therapy animals are capable of helping, so it was great for the team to have the opportunity to come here and provide a relaxing, fun and educational experience for the students.”

Since 2004 Animals Asia’s Professor Paws programme has been bringing registered therapy dogs to Chinese schools and community events to teach responsible pet care and compassion towards animals.

Close interaction with dogs is proven to increase self-confidence and pro-social behaviour among students, while encouraging the development of compassion.
