After nine years in a tiny cage sun bear Kaffe is about to be rescued by Animals Asia ahead of 1,300km four-day trip home.
In addition, two macaque monkeys will also be handed over and given directly to the local forestry who will release them back into the wild.
The rescue takes place in Dak Lak province - best known as Vietnam’s coffee growing area. It’s also the location of Animals Asia’s work with Elephant Conservation Centre.
Leading the rescue will be Animals Asia Vietnam Director Tuan Bendixsen.
He said:
“It’s a long drive but after we pick up Kaffe it’s just four more days till he’s home after years of living in a very small cage with substandard care.”
It’s believed that the bear is aged around nine years old. The rescue was prompted by information passed over by local charity ENV.
Animals Asia has rescued nearly 600 bears - the vast majority from the bile trade. It continues to care for almost 400 bears in sanctuaries in Vietnam and China.
